|ZYGO RECEIVES FIRST ORDERS FOR MESA SYSTEM|
MIDDLEFIELD, CONNECTICUT (March 18, 1998)......Zygo Corporation (NASDAQ:ZIGO) announced today that it has successfully installed its new MESA system. MESA, introduced in late September 1997 at the DISKCON Show in San Jose, provides customers the ability to measure the surface shape, in three dimensions, of parts which are nonspecular and previously could not be measured using standard interferometry. The advantages of ZYGO's patented approach are it is noncontact, high speed, and large field of view as well as its three-dimensional capability. Additionally the MESA system has many features previously not available in interferometric measurement systems including, a long working distance, ability to measure from non-specular to specular parts, a reduction in vibration sensitivity of 20 times that of standard interferometry, and it is self-referencing from one part to the next.
These first MESA orders were received from data storage customers who will use the system for disk flatness measurement. ZYGO is working with many producers of high technology parts where part dimensional tolerances require the use of noncontact measurement. Examples include pump and internal combustion engine parts for the automotive industry, semiconductor parts, and a variety of additional parts used in hard disk drives.
Robert A. Smythe, vice president and director of sales and marketing, commenting on the initial success stated, "The MESA system is being extremely well received by customers in a number of industries. One data storage customer after receiving a demonstration of the systems capabilities asked, 'Why would anyone want anything else?'"
