Zygo Corporation's Precision Optical Metrology Team
Receives 2013 Paul F. Forman Engineering Excellence Award
WASHINGTON, August 28, 2013 --The Optical Society (OSA) is pleased to announce that the Automotive Precision Optical Metrology Team from Zygo Corporation is the winner of the 2013 Paul F. Forman Engineering Excellence Award. The team, comprised of members Frank Stanzel, Johann Ableitner, Herbert Grois, Robert Sachs, and Udo Waigand, is recognized for more than a decade of outstanding engineering work in developing custom optical metrology solutions for the automotive industry, enabling ever-higher precision engineering tolerances for improved emissions, reliability, and fuel efficiency." Team members will accept the award during the plenary session at OSA's annual meeting, Frontiers in Optics (FiO), taking place Oct. 6-11, in Orlando, Fla.
"ZYGO's Automotive Precision Optical Metrology Team epitomizes Paul Forman's belief in the spirit of collaboration and goodwill in optical engineering," said OSA President Donna Strickland. "Their work has had a significant impact not only in the optics field, but also in the automotive field, making today's cars more environmentally friendly and reliable. OSA is honored to recognize the ZYGO team for their commitment to reducing emissions, and we wish them continued success."
The Automotive Precision Optical Metrology Team was started in 1998 by Frank Stanzel, application specialist for high pressure diesel components. John Ableitner, key account manager and specialist in optical measurement systems, joined the team in 2000 after extensive work as an optical measurement specialist for the German army and several private corporations. Senior applications specialist Herbert Grois is an expert in optical systems and manufacturing of high precision fixturings, and began working with the ZYGO team in 2002. Robert Sachs joined the team in 2007 as an applicant specialist and R&D scientist, creating advanced automotive application and analysis software. Udo Waigand began his tenure with the group in 2006 as an applications specialist and expert in high precision fixturings manufacturing.
